A Christmas makeover of the Seagull 4A TLR

A Christmas makeover of the Seagull 4A TLR

I am not going to talk too much about this “camera makeover”, as it were. For some time now, I wanted to give my Seagull 4A a change, to improve its both functionality and its aesthetics. Think of it as a Xmas gift to an old faithful friend, which this camera was for the best part of last 20 yrs or so.

A couple of filters were in order: an UV and a yellow one, both to ensure the taking lens stays clean and protected (the UV), and also to enhance the contrast when need arises (yellow 2x). Given a few flared frames this summer past, a good wide lens hood found its way onto the camera (the yellow filter is not in the photos here)

My initial research for a 34mm threaded filter came up with showing dear prices for this size, mainly because these filters are those of vintage provenance, such as BW, Hoya, Kodak and the like. Lens hoods in this thread were also pretty expensive. Mind you, I am not one to shirk from paying premium when premium is needed, but in this case I believe in keeping it simple (and cheaper).

So, long story short: a step up ring 34 to 37mm fine threaded was acquired, and the two 37mm filters also. The lens hood is also 37mm and it would appear that everything fits together really good. True, the lens hood rim is just a bit higher and it would appear to be in the viewing lens field, but when looking through the focusing lens the rim does not appear to be seen. It probably lays on the very fringe of the viewing field, I guess.

One more thing to do: take some photographs with this setup. My main concern is vignette, because the step up ring and the filter may create such. This remains to be seen, and soon, because the camera is already loaded with Azopan PS-24 200 ASA, set at 50 ASA as the film is older than 15 yrs. Fingers crossed !
