My Minox journey continues…

Agfa Optima Ia

Agfa Optima Ia

Born in 1962, it was dubbed “the first fully automatic camera in the world”. True or not, it remains a beautiful example of a long gone craftmanship. I have good memories with this camera; alas, I do not use it anymore.

A good lens, although not exactly impressive, the 2.8/45 Agfa Color Agnar provides really crisp negatives, in the right circumstances. A range of shutter speeds, from 1/30 to 1/250, are operated by the electro-mechanical system provided by the coupled meter. This works if the camera is in A mode; otherwise, you can choose your desired aperture and the camera will do the rest for you. If in A mode, the camera sets the combination of aperture/speed upon light situations; pressing the shutter release by half pops a signal dot in the viewfinder: red for check your settings, green for you’re good to go and take that photograph.

Focus is by estimating the distance, to which purpose three icons are visible on the lens outer ring. Separate, one can set the focus on 1 meter, on a distinct marking on the right hand side of the lens.
