Varna, a major city of Bulgaria, on the coast of the Black Sea. The main Bulgarian commercial maritime port, and a city that changed the European history in 1444. A modern hub for business and commerce alike, filled to the brim with young people and exceedingly beautiful Orthodox churches and cathedrals. A place that you will never forget if life will take you there, no matter the reason or time of the year.
As it happens, I travelled there while on holidays, spent on the beaches of the wonderful seaside resort of Albena. And at my daughter’s behest, being fully aware that there is a great Dolphinarium in Varna, she basically requisitioned me and her mother and we all went to see the beauties on show.

Good moments, and due to my Minox C (Ilford FP125) in my pocket, I have the proof. I was amazed when I processed the negatives back home, the shots of the dolphins playing were something I never thought to come out as they did.
But Varna is more than that, much more. At the time of our visit, the city has just been nominated as the “European Youth City” for that year. And that was evident, from the number or young people present in the city, either locals or visitors. Beautiful place to be in, when you’re not that young anymore. The street life is incredible, and I am afraid my shots don’t do justice to how the city looked like at the time.

A lot of senior citizens were relaxing in the tree shadows of the streets. A lot of street sales went on, art, photographs, books, clothing, artisanal stuff, so there was always something to look upon and enjoy the sights.
