Underneath the dress, the black F2 and the chrome F2 are the same. Of course, the black one is a notch up in being sought, due to its more professional appearance. To be honest, I like my black Nikon F2 Photomic just a tad better, for several reasons, one of them being that when worn, the camera displays its rubbed off corners like a badge of honour. The brass reveals itself, making a camera much more pleasant in looking at it, while also screaming “I am a long runner in this game”. Also, it makes the camera a tad inconspicuous, which is to be desired when travelling some parts of this crazy world.
Reality is that the paint is much less durable than the chrome; the chrome ages more gracefully, it has that 60’s look about it, and it looks like it is indeed a camera that is intended to take photographs with. The black looks more like a collector’s item than a camera to roam about with, hanging about your neck.
Anyways, I digress: this camera here, a very nice Nikon F2 Photomic, with the DP1 prism attached to it, has been manufactured between Oct. 1975 to Jan. 1976. It has a Nikkor 50/1.4 AI attached to it, made in the almost same period. A good combination for taking photographs, I would say.
Mechanically, it is the same as its dark coloured brother. If you would like to spend your day checking those specs, you may have a look here, for very detailed, er, details. Great site, by the way, for all classic Nikon cameras. A lot to learn, a lot to peruse, and it’s rather an encyclopedia for all things Nikon. Or, if you feel inclined or curious, you may check my own thoughts on this camera here.
